Radio is rocking it article

Due to music becoming fast accessible online and on your phone, the radio has taken a back seat. We no longer need to tune into our wireless to hear our favorite song played at a certain time, we can access them whenever we want.

So how does the radio still compete with this new youthful and technical way to listen to music?

On average in the North East, Real Radio has up to 252,000 adult listeners each week. Its breakfast show has been regarded one of the most popular shows in the North East and despite new MP3 players and the growth of the internet ,the radio on average still reaches up to 92.5% of people aged 12+ each week.

Radios across the Northeast have not only been credited by numerous businesses for its promotional methods and how they have helped improve audience but by music events, which have occurred in the area.

Capital (northeast) are mainly aimed at the younger age generation 13-late 20s and they promote music events which are relevant for that age group such as One Direction, North east live and they do this either by introducing the event after a song is played that it is linked to or either by using them as a prize for a competition.

On the other hand Real is more aimed towards an older audience with the radios slogan “the 80s the 90s and Now”. Their promotional efforts are mainly toward parents who have children, which will be interested in some of the youthful events happening.

Although its age range is higher it still incorporates adverts which appeal to the younger audience to grab their attention and make them aware of their favorite bands coming to the Northeast.

It isn’t just aimed at relevant bands and music acts of today , they also promote music events which the parents and older generation would be interested in like the revival tour of the BackStreet Boys and Gary Barlow making its promotional methods and all round effort.

Not only do they promote events on the radio but they have online promotional methods too. On both websites they have a dedicated page called Events. For capital it has the one main event coming to the north east which is North East Live 2014 but on Real there are a numerous events and acts which are at some point playing in the North East.
Both radio stations are part of a franchise and this is why Capital’s website only has one event for the North East but has bigger events linked with the company posted on their to appeal to their audience although they are not for this region.

The only downfall to both radio stations is fact that they don’t broadcast niche gigs and events that happen in the North East in places such as the 02 academy which people miss out on.
